Royal iPod An Exciting Gift For Anyone

By

You have to love the hub bub surrounding President and First Lady Obama’s gift to Queen Elizabeth II: an iPod. It wasn’t just any iPod. It was one that was equipped to play videos as well as music, and in an even more thoughtful gesture the Obama’s added a nice touch to their gift: a video of Her Royal Highness’ visit to the United States in 2007. Why is this such a big deal, you may be wondering? Well, according to etiquette experts this was not the proper thing to give Her Majesty.

Funny thing about etiquette experts: they failed to mention to anyone that the Queen specifically asked for a video iPod. Queen Elizabeth is a forward thinking monarch, one who already enjoys a music iPod that is full of ‘show tunes and easy listening music’. Okay, so maybe most people have a hard time imagining this beautiful and regal woman padding around Buckingham Palace with her ear buds in, but why not, we say? After all, Queen Elizabeth has the right to enjoy the more mundane things in life just like her supporters.

iPods have become a very popular gift for music lovers of all ages. It is not uncommon to see people as young as five or six years old teaching their parents how to use an iPod or even how to use iTunes to download their favorite music. And with iPods coming in all different shapes, sizes and colors, it is a great way to start teaching youngsters the concept of responsibility. A small iPod, like a Nano or a Mini, that holds a small amount of songs is perfect for the younger generation.

The small mobile music devices are very quickly taking the place of more standard musical devices. Portable cassette players are almost a thing of the past, a dinosaur for the technology age. Portable CD players, while still available at most electronic stores, are also starting to become extinct. And most car and truck stereos now come equipped with ports to plug your iPod into. At the rate things are going, compact discs will be joining 8-track tapes, vinyl LPs, and cassettes in museums around the world.

The world is going digital quickly, and the iPod even saves us the trip to the local music store to buy the newest album of our favorite band. Instead we just hop onto the Internet, log into our iTunes account and buy what we want without ever having to change out of our pajamas. Does this mean the human race is getting lazy? No. It just means that more and more of the things we use on a daily basis are becoming more and more portable and convenient.

Did President and First Lady Obama make a royal faux pas? Not in this day and age. iPods are the perfect gift for anyone who loves to listen to music, watch videos, and even read books. Yes, you can even download your favorite books onto these handy and convenient devices. That’s good for the trees. And if a video iPod is good for the Queen, then it is definitely good for anyone in the family.
